Homemade Chili

Growing up chili was one of those things that was a tradition for my family yo have on Halloween. That was our first batch of the year, and than we would have it periodically after that. I would be lying if I said I didn’t crave chili eat least multiple times a week. I know, I know, this would seem weird considering it isn’t always cold outside. I am here to say I don’t think we should subject ourselves to only eating stews, soups or chilis when it is cold. I could eat a bowl of chilli while it is 90 degrees outside and not care at all. This brings me to my second point, now that I live in a climate that is hotter than what I am used to all year around I am not sure if anybody is thinking about a hot bowl of chili right now or ever… except me.

There is no shame in my game.

Since it was halloween last Thursday this is when I decided to make a yummy batch of chili. Chili is pretty basic when it comes to the main ingredients in it, but depending on the depth you want your chili to taste, and how cooked you wanted everything I recommend making it earlier in the day and letting it simmer for hours.

I brought my chili to a boil and let it simmer for a remaining 3 hours.

Key Notes:

  • You will only use 1/2 of the onion.

  • You can substitute the ground turkey for beff or chicken.

Ingredients:

  • 24 ounces tomato sauce

  • 30 ounces kidney beans (2 cans)

  • 1 pack ground turkey

  • 3 diced roma tomatoes

  • 1 green pepper

  • 1 white onion

  • 1 pack chili seasoning

  • 1 cup water

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • salt + pepper to taste

Directions:

  • Bring a dutch oven or stockpot to medium/high heat. Add the olive oil. Begin to dice all of your vegetables (only dice half the onion), and once fully diced add to pot and mix. Continue to mix and let vegetables become glossy (about 5 minutes). After the 5 minutes add in the whole pack of ground turkey meat. Fully cook the turkey meat.

  • Once the turkey meat is fully cooked, open and drain the kidney beans. Add the kidney means to the pot. Mix everything together well. Add the tomato sauce, water, chili seasoning and salt + pepper to taste.

  • One the liquids are added bring the whole thing to a boil and mix. Reduce to low burner and let simmer at least 3 hours.

( You can let this simmer longer, just make sure you keep an eye on it and do not leave the house with burner unattended)

Feel free to add any toppings you like. I always add cheese, sour cream and cornbread to mine :)
